i used to use a hunk of potato or apple, i tried the sponge with water ( they will drown in a water dish) but they ate the sponge & i did not like that idea. i found the apple had enough moisture for them. u can also feed them cat food, high in protein. shake them with the powders before u feed the gecko, just the ones he will eat not all of them. also u need egg cartons or i liked paper towel tubes, just shake the end into the bag of powder to get them out. they need to be on an angle to shed, if not they will die.
it is the powder. mine did that so i put it in and shook it up 12 hours before.
Good Luck.
believe it or not crickets breath thorugh their skins and when you dust them with the calcium powder over a day or so they die because they suffocate!! a great tip..only dust them before you feed them to the gecko and they wont die!! remember to gut load them aswell and keep them warm.dont feed them anything to watery though.greens and carrots are great or any cereal. so dont dust them and leave them as this is why they are dying!!! i hope this helps!!
I raise crickets (and other prey) for my reptiles & have had the best success by doing the following (will adjust sizes & amounts on the assumption u r only buying a few dozen at a time) ~~
Get a rubbermaid type tote, shoebox size is fine ($1 WalMart), drill several small holes in the lid, place a pop bottle lid full of water in the container, a dish of cricket food (oatmeal, rabbit pellets, dry cat food, fish food flakes, just a tiny bit calcium/vit powder blended together), & a few pieces of egg carton for them to hang out in/breed on. You can successfully keep 4 or 5 dozen in a small set-up like this for a couple of weeks. Do not sprinkle the calcium powder til just before feeding them to the gecko. Change the water daily & replenish the food as needed. I've tried several of the cricket foods on the market & they just seem to do better w/ the recipe above. If u throw a piece of apple or orange in with the crickets change it every day because just a tiny bit of mold will kill all the feeder prey.
do not dust the crickets right when you get them. Buy a ''gutloading formula'' to feed the crickets. When you put a gutloader in the cricket cage, do not shake it up. When you are going to feed the gecko, put crickets in a bag with vitamin powder and shake them up, then put them in the geckos enclosure so the gecko can eat.
They are probably eating the vitamin powder, which is too high in nutrients and kill them. INstead, feed them off dog food, fish flakes, porridge, cereal, things like that. Add a small slice of orange for moisture. Only shake the crickets in the powder JUST prior to feeding.
Well, they are bugs, so most likely if you shake them, yea, they're going to die!
Try putting the powder in and mix it with like a spoon real carefully and make sure you wash the spoon!
we cut up a potato and that is all and they last for weeks,no powder or anything else
bits of carrot apple etc for food and hydration also makes them more nutritious for gecko
Where are you keeping them? They may be getting too cold.
